Missing women search - Third launch over the festive period
The Police through HM Coastguard tasked the relief Teignmouth lifeboat 'Mary Lewis' to assist with the search for a high 'risk missing lady' in the Maidencombe area. The lady has a history of going missing, and previously had entered the sea near Maidencombe.
The lifeboat and its volunteer crew conducted a shoreline search near Maidencombe, and the Teignmouth XP boat was launched to search the shoreline of the River Teign.

Helicopters from RAF Chivenor and HM Coastguard at Portland, plus local police, HM Coastguard teams from Torbay and Teignmouth and two members of the Teignmouth lifeboat shore crew helped search the area, and the missing lady was found at approx 19:50 on the shore by the police.

Yacht aground on the Bar
Following a request from HM Coastguard Brixham, the relief Atlantic 85 lifeboat 'Mary Lewis' was launched to assist the 22ft yacht 'De-Velde' with three persons on board which had gone aground on the Bar, north of the Ness at Teignmouth.
The crew and passengers of the yacht decided to remain on board and wait the 2 hours for the tide to begin flooding again, and refloat them. The volunteer lifeboat crew securely set the yachts' anchor and returned to station.
The lifeboat launched again at 15:41 and with the rising tide helped the yacht to refloat. The yacht crew were unable to re-start their auxiliary engines but set their sails to continue their passage to Exmouth, and requested a tow from the estuary mouth into clear water.
Once the volunteer lifeboat crew were satisfied that the yacht was safely clear of the river mouth and on its way to Exmouth, the tow was withdrawn, and the lifeboat returned to station at 16:25.

Yacht with broken rudder near the Ore Stone
A request from HM Coastguard Brixham resulted in the Teignmouth lifeboat 'The Two Annes' being launched to assist a 21 foot yacht 'Sooty' with 4 adults on board. The yacht had sheared it's rudder just above the waterline and although they had some assistance from a 2HP outdoor engine, they were making very slow progress.

The yacht was quickly located near the Ore Stone and taken under tow to Brixham (taking about 60 minutes).

Two rescued from the River Teign, after 16ft lugger capsizes
Numerous 999 calls to Brixham Coastguard resulted in the Teignmouth lifeboat being launched to assist 2 adults in the water near Coombe Cellars. The 16ft Beer Lugger the two adults were sailing, was capsized by a gust of wind leaving them struggling in the water.

Various members of the public witnessed the accident which was fortunate as the two casualties were not wearing lifejackets and also had no means of communication to call for help.

The volunteer lifeboat crew recovered the two from the water and took them ashore where Paramedics assessed them and then allowed them to go home. HM Coastguard also offered water safety advice.

It transpired that they had lifejackets on board, but the couple considered them too bulky to wear.

Tasked to assist Jet Ski near Dawlish Warren

5.5m Speedboat sinks off Teignmouth – Teignmouth volunteer lifeboat crew swiftly recover three men from the sea - one for the second time!

HM Coastguard Brixham tasked the Teignmouth lifeboat 'The Two Annes' to go to the assistance of the three adult occupants of a 5.5m Fletcher speedboat that had gone ashore on Ness Pole Sands, about 100 metres off the Ness in adverse sea and weather conditions.
The tide was almost at low water, the sea state was rough with a strong ebb tide of about 6 knots, with a 2 metre swell and a strong easterly cold breeze.

The speedboat which was fitted with a large outboard engine, had attempted to re-enter Teignmouth river estuary from a southerly direction close to the Ness, and over the sand bar. The speedboat went aground and was subsequently swamped by the breaking waves. The three boat occupants attempted in vain to bail out the water from their boat, but the boat sank very quickly. The three men became separated from their boat but stayed together and with their boat now drifting were about 30m from their boat. Two of the speedboat occupants were wearing wetsuits and buoyancy aids, but the third occupant did not have a wetsuit.

The Teignmouth volunteer lifeboat crew were paged as the speedboat was became stuck on the bar, but as the crew were preparing to launch the lifeboat, it became clear that the speedboat occupants were now in the water, so duty helm Adam Truhol wasted no time in launching the lifeboat, albeit with only three volunteer crew instead of the normal four as lives were at risk.

The lifeboat was unable to approach the three men in the water directly because of the sea conditions - so helm Truhol took the lifeboat around the sand bar and approached them from the south side. All three were swiftly recovered to the lifeboat and taken to paramedics waiting at the lifeboat station.

From the lifeboat launch time to the paramedics treating the casualties at the lifeboat station was about 8 minutes.

Although the casualties had all been in the cold water for 3-4, the paramedics declared all the rescued as OK, but the person without the wetsuit was close to hypothermia and took longer to recover.

The lifeboat crew then collected a marker buoy from the harbourmasters office and returned to the sunken speedboat towing it to Bundle Head, for later recovery by the harbourmasters team.

Mechanic Charlie Woolnough whilst helping the casualties recognised one of them from a shout in 2009 - it transpired that one of them had been on a 'jet-ski' that broke down off Eastcliff - see the details listed on 25/10/2009.
