Young man swept into the sea at Spray Point

HM Coastguard tasked the Teignmouth RNLI relief lifeboat 'Peterborough Beer Festival III' and its volunteer crew of four to a person in the water between Spray Point and Smugglers Cove.

Two young men of of 18 and 16 years old were caught by a large wave whilst walking on the sea wall - one of them was swept into the sea and taken about 20m from the shore and only managed to keep afloat by holding on to his sports bag. The lifeboat recovered him from the water, and a team from HM Coastguard Teignmouth recovered the other man - both were taken to Teignmouth lifeboat station where paramedics were waiting.

Both young men were suffering from hypothermia and were transferred by ambulance to hospital.

Fisherman brought ashore from fishing vessel to visit his daughter in hospital.

A fisherman on board a local fishing vessel was transferred to the lifeboat to see his daughter who had been taken to hospital in an emergency situation. The fishing boat had its nets down some distance from Teignmouth. The skipper of the fishing boat realizing it could be several hours before he could get back to port, called the authorities to ask for help, and the lifeboat launched at 09:35 and was able to get the fisherman ashore at Teignmouth soon after 10.00am

Seriously Ill Fishing Boat Skipper transferred to helicopter

HM Coastguard Brixham asked for the assistance of the Teignmouth lifeboat and its volunteer crew to help the skipper of the fishing vessel ‘Lola K’ who had been taken ill some 6.5 miles east of Teignmouth.
When the lifeboat arrived on scene the Coastguard winchman was on the fishing boat providing medical support. A crewman was put aboard the fishing vessel, and the situation assessed with the helicopter winchman.
It was decided that it was too dangerous to try and lift the ill skipper off the fishing boat because of all the overhead obstructions, it being safer to transfer the casualty to the lifeboat and then winch him from the lifeboat to the helicopter.
The lifeboat then came alongside the stern of the fishing vessel for the transfer as the heavy swell and the fishing equipment down the fishing boat sides made transfer anywhere else hazardous.
The sick man was safely transferred to the helicopter and taken to hospital.

Launched to two persons in the water off Smugglers Cove

The Teignmouth Lifeboat 'The Two Annes' was launched at the request of HM Coastguard Brixham, after a report from the Eastcliff NCI (National Coastwatch Institute) Tower that two persons were in the water about 1.5m out to sea.
The jet ski had apparently launched with three persons on board and was logged returning with only one person on board. A thorough search of the area found nothing untoward - the search was then extended close to Smugglers Cove where two persons were located and taken onboard the lifeboat and taken to the lifeboat station. Whilst the two casualties were being recovered, the jet ski driver had beached the jet ski at Eastcliff and made his own way to the lifeboat station to be re-united with his colleagues. A paramedic team checked that all was OK with the two casualties (who had been wearing suitable protective clothing). The lifeboat returned to Eastcliff and recovered the jet ski to Polly Steps.

Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat called to 5 incidents in one day!

The Teignmouth lifeboat ‘The Two Annes’ launched on Thursday August 20th at 13:15 with a volunteer crew of four to be present at the Dawlish Carnival and to provide a demonstration with the Exmouth RNLI lifeboat and a search and rescue helicopter from RN Culdrose – all this had to be abandoned to attend four incidents during the Carnival and one in the early evening.

The search and rescue demonstration was about to get under way when HM Coastguard Brixham tasked the lifeboat to a 19ft yacht where a member of the crew was suffering from extensive burns to his feet. The lifeboat crew attended quickly and put the casualty ashore at Dawlish Breakwater where paramedics were waiting.

The lifeboat was then re-tasked by HM Coastguard to the MV ‘My Queen’ where a mother and her baby were very poorly, the babe-in-arms and her mother were taken to Dawlish Breakwater and put shore, where HM Auxiliary Coastguard were waiting to help.

20 minutes later a missing child was reported, and the lifeboat began searching from Boat Cove and along the Dawlish seafront. After an extensive search along the shore line the search was stood down, as the missing child was found unharmed and well in Dawlish.

On the journey back from Dawlish to the Teignmouth boathouse, the second person onboard the yacht ‘Ginko’ that was involved in the first incident (crew with burns), was concerned about handling the boat alone, so the lifeboat escorted her towards Teignmouth and kept a watch to ensure she reached the Teignmouth visitors pontoon and moored safely.

Upturned vessel - 3 persons reported in the water
The Teignmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat 'The Two Annes' and an RNLI lifeguard responded to reports of three people in the water off Ness Beach and without lifejacket's, after their small boat was swamped. A group of kayakers from Reading University managed to help the casualties to the shore before the lifeboat arrived. The three casualties were then assisted by the volunteer lifeboat crew, a lifeguard using the local RNLI Rescue Water Craft (Jet ski)and HM Coastguard.

The three had been onboard a small boat that was swamped in the choppy conditions off Teignmouth and in torrential rain. With no VHF radio onboard, an onlooker had raised the alarm and the lifeboat crew and HM Coastguard were able to provide medical assistance as the casualties were suffering from mild hypothermia.

Lifejacket's were still unwrapped
Rory Smith, RNLI Area Lifeguard Supervisor who helped from the jet ski reported that he noticed the casualties had lifejacket's onboard but they were still in the packets they were bought in, and all had automatically inflated inside the bags.

  Inflatable Dinghy Incident
A volunteer crewman and the on-duty DLA were concerned over an inflatable dinghy with two people on board at the sea end of a sand-spit close to Spratt Sands. The tide was on the ebb and because of the choppy conditions on the bar an immediate launch of the lifeboat was made. The occupants of the dinghy appeared unaware of the possible danger of being carried out to see on a rip current, and were persuaded after some discussion to return to the beach.
About 45 minutes later the inflatable was again reported in the same position and an RNLI lifeguard this time approached them and reinforced the earlier safety message resulting in the two young adults moving to a safer area.

  Windsurfer's reported in difficulties
The Teignmouth lifeboat was launched after a report that two windsurfer's were in difficulties near the Ness. On arriving at the scene, one windsurfer had made his way ashore, and the other was continuing to sail without any problems. After the lifeboat crew checked that all was well, the lifeboat returned to station and the second windsurfer also went ashore where both windsurfer's were aided by the local Coastguard team.

Missing Kayaker found in cave

HM Coastguard at Brixham received a call from a Kayaker that his friend had not returned when expected. The Coastguard launched a search for the missing person and asked the Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat 'The Two Annes' to search in the Oddicombe area. The lifeboat with its volunteer crew of four, arrived in the area at about 14:30 and located the missing Kayaker stranded on a ledge about 4m back in a cave.

The kayaker, a man in his mid-30s had suffered a capsize and in making for land was taken by the current and the sea swell into the cave at the Devil's Armchair near Babbacombe. The man appeared to be uninjured, and was able to wave to the lifeboat crew.

Unfortunately the cave the missing kayaker had found himself in had a protruding rock face above it that did not easily allow the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team to reach him - and the seaward entrance to the cave was protected by sharp rocks and a 1.5m to 2.0m sea swell which prevented the lifeboat getting close.

After much discussion the Coastguard on-scene commander arranged with the lifeboat crew for a throwing line and lifejacket to be lowered by the Coastguard to the casualty (about 6 metre's) - the casualty donned the lifejacket and attached the line to his wrist. The Coastguard team then threw the other end of the line back to the lifeboat.

This then allowed the kayaker to enter the water relatively safely, and he was pulled to the lifeboat that had stationed itself about 8 metre's away and taken immediately to a waiting paramedic team at Babbacombe Pier.

Launch to investigate drifting 18ft boat
HM Coastguard Brixham requested the launch of the Teignmouth relief lifeboat 'Peterborough Festival III' to a small boat reported drifting about 4 miles south-west of Teignmouth. The lifeboat and its volunteer crew of four launched at 8:00am and located the drifting boat with nobody on board.

HM Coastguard checked with the boat owner who confirmed that they were safe and well at home, and the assumption was made that the boat had come loose from the mooring and drifted on the tide out to sea. The boat was taken in tow and returned to Teignmouth where it was securely moored on one of the Teignmouth Visitor Pontoons.

Early morning launch for Teignmouth lifeboat to stranded rower

A stranded rower near to Coombe Cellars on the River Teign was rescued by the volunteer crew of the Teignmouth relief lifeboat – ‘Peterborough Beer Festival III’ soon after 8:00am this morning.

The rower failed to appreciate the strength of the  current, resulting in his boat getting trapped on the steel water-ski ramp near Coombe Cellars.  He climbed onto the ramp allowing the boat to drift away. and decided to wait for the tide to recede, but then called HM Coastguard at Brixham. He confirmed that he was safe and they agreed to request the lifeboat to be launched. The lifeboat returned to station at 08:20.
